Florida IFTA State Tax Overview

The State of Florida is a member of the International Fuel Tax
Agreement (IFTA).

To offer a comprehensive understanding, we have listed the IFTA reporting requirements, the penalty imposed, and links to other important resources.

1. Who needs to complete Florida IFTA Registration?

  • Any Entity or business originating in Florida that operates Qualified Motor Vehicle(s) in one or more IFTA member jurisdictions should obtain a Florida IFTA license in order to meet their fuel taxation requirements with other jurisdictions.
  • These entities should list Florida as their base jurisdiction in order to obtain a Florida IFTA license.
  • The entity must have a registered place of business and should maintain records for their QMVs in Florida. According to IFTA, the requirements for a QMV are:
    • Have two axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or registered GVW exceeding 26,000 pounds; or
    • Have three or more axles, regardless of weight; or
    • Used in combination with a trailer, for a combined GVW or registered GVW in excess of 26,000 pounds.

2. How Do I Apply for a Florida IFTA License?

To apply for the Florida IFTA license, you must file the Application for International Fuel Tax Agreement and accompanying decal order forms.

  • The state of Florida doesn’t charge a fee for the annual IFTA License. Florida IFTA decals are $4.00 per pair.
  • Please note that this application can only be paper filed. Once completed, you can mail your application to the following address:

3. How do I renew my Florida IFTA License?

  • Florida IFTA decals expire on December 31st every year. 60-90 days before the end of the current calendar year, the Florida Bureau of Commercial Vehicle and Driver Services will contact IFTA licensees regarding the decal reorder form.
  • This decal order form also serves as the application for renewing the IFTA license.
  • Before the renewal of your IFTA license, you must:
    • Have filed your third quarter IFTA return for the current tax year.
    • Have made all the required tax payments.
    • Ensure there are no delinquent tax returns from previous quarters.

4. What are the Florida IFTA reporting requirements?

If you have obtained an IFTA license for your QMVs from the state of Florida, you must file your IFTA report every quarter.

IFTA requires you to complete your reporting even if your QMVs haven’t traveled or all the miles traveled were within the state of Florida.

The due dates for filing IFTA Florida Quarterly returns, depending on your corresponding reporting period, are as follows:

*If the due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the next business day is considered the due date.

7. What are the penalties for not filing Florida IFTA Reports?

The state of Florida may impose a penalty if you fail to file your return or complete the tax payment on time.

The penalty amount is $50 or 10% of the net tax liability. Additionally, interest will be added to all late tax payments.
